Free hunting, definitely, without a doubt. You can't put a cost on protecting the internet

Lots of different ways. The most powerful one is probably is using the registration feature that forces the admin to activate all new accounts. Other ones include:
Integrating an api function of a spam filter or something where it can look up new user info upon registering etc
Banning all free email. TrueCrypt support forum is known for doing this and only allowing users with a paid email provider to post
Blocking specific letter and number combinations often used by spammers.
